ANNOUNCEMENTS:

NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTH SPONSORS FARM & RIVER DAY

To promote good nutrition, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island has given the farmers market $400 to sponsor Farm & River Day. The money will pay nutritionist Heidi Hetzler to present lessons at Cranston’s Edgewood Highland Elementary School where about 60 percent of the students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Then at the June 19 market, the children will help gather ingredients from the farmers to make a healthy recipe in the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet kitchen. They will share the food with their parents, the farmers, and other market customers. Free nutritious recipes and information about EBT and WIC coupon use at market will also be distributed.
The program is a continuation of the Green Bean Project started last year by the market with a grant from the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund and Kids First. Last September, all Edgewood Highland sixth graders traveled to Michele Kozloski’s Zephyr Farm in western Cranston, learned about laying hens and vegetable crops and picked 100 pounds of green beans. The next day, working with Food Service Director Mike Marrocco, the children prepared the green beans for the school’s lunch. The program was a huge success, especially when the children ate their pickings.
The market has grant money to run the program again at Edgewood Highland, but would like to expand to more schools. You can help by making a donation to the farmers market. Write “Green Bean Project” on the subject line. For every $500, we can add a school.

RETURN & REUSE AT THE FARMERS MARKET

  1. BERRY BOXES: We collect quart, pint, and half pint boxes at the market, attach a market sticker, and give them to farmers to reuse. In three years, we have reused 11,600 boxes. Please wash boxes and do not return other sizes.

  1. HONEY JARS & CARTONS: Farmers Chang Xiong and Michelle Kozloski will reuse clean egg cartons. Bernie Bieder will reuse honey jars.

  2. BOOKS & CDS: Our Big Green Book Sales raise money for the market’s environmental programs. Leftover books go to local libraries. Books & CDs can be left on porches at 25 Berwick Lane, 10 & 18 Williams Avenue and 37 Ferncrest Avenue. Please no damaged books or text books.

  1. DAMAGED CDS: We recycle damaged CDs and cases this year. Use the box at the recycling table.

  1. PLASTIC PLANT POTS: October 16, the Edgewood Garden Club collects plastic pots (especially 3 inch and 4 inch), six packs, and trays for farmers to reuse.

  2. POPSICLE STICKS: Farmers use popsicle sticks to mark trays of plant seedlings. Bring your collection to the recycling table.

  3. SHOPPING BAGS: Farmers no longer receive free plastic bags from RI DEM. Please bring bags for your groceries. Market bags are also available for sale.

  4. NEW SHOPPING BAGS FOR SALE. A statewide cooperative effort of farmers markets is working to eliminate plastic bags. We will sell "I Got Fresh in RI" cotton tote bags for $5. Thanks to our market and others, these bags are made in New Hampshire of 100 percent recycled cotton. We also have Pawtuxet Village Farmers Market shopping bags for $10. Both bags are available at the recycling table.
